Uniq Arts and Dance: Henna Art with Jaidra

This life we live...it's strange, painful at times, but oh so beautiful.

I am a fusion dance artist and teacher, a fire dancer, and a visual artist. I draw inspiration from nature, music, and the amazing people that come into my life. I am also a conservationist who makes jewelry and found object multimedia craft type art in my spare time (when I'm not reading, writing, or lighting things on fire and dancing around with them). I love to dance barefoot on the beach, watch the stars move inexorably across the heavens, and to laugh with the people that I love. I am currently based in Greenville SC, working with Discordia Arts to provide unique and exciting entertainment to the Upstate.

An ancient art form, henna is a paste that is created from the leaves of the henna plant and applied to the skin. The henna paste begins to stain the skin almost immediately and the stain intensifies the longer the paste remains on the body. The stain darkens over a period of 48 hours and lasts 1 to 3 weeks depending on care.


1 day after paste removal

I make my own henna paste using fresh powder from Henna Caravan, essential oils, lemon juice, and sugar to ensure freshness, high quality, and safety. I do not use "black henna". The final stain will be brown in color.

Henna stains will be darkest on the palms of the hands or soles of the feet, and get lighter the further away on the body you go from the hands or feet. Please be aware that henna on the back, though beautiful, will not be as dark as henna on the hands.

Pricing:

Prices for henna body art vary based on the size and intricacy of the design. Very detailed designs and thick tribal or silhouette pieces that require a large amount of henna will cost more . The following can be used as a general guide to prices for festival situations:

Small designs (1 - 3 Inches): 5-15$

Medium designs (3 - 5 Inches): 10-20$

Large designs (5-7 inches) 15- 30$

Anything larger than 7 inches will be custom priced starting at 30$

Henna has been used for centuries in a variety of cultures for ceremonial purposes as well as for it's relaxing and cooling properties. Having henna done can be a meditative healing experience or just plain fun. I am excited to be able to bring this beautiful art form to the upstate of South Carolina.
